VD: It's short for a lot of things

On this Valentine's Day, I have decided to relinquish my bitter demeanor and actually talk about love and the wonders of love and loving others. So let's talk about VD: venereal disease. First, besides its good fortune to share the same abbreviation as this annual holiday, venereal disease is a lot like Valentine's Day in that VD is about sharing with those you love, much like in kindergarten when we played in the sand box and shared the sand shovel or the swings on the playground--of course you shared staph infections and ringworm.

Venereal comes from the Latin venereus from venus meaning "sexual love, sexual desire" and was made venereal in 1432 meaning "of or pertaining to sexual desire or intercourse." In 1658 it was coupled with disease as another term for "sexual transmitted disease." There are many VDs such as syphilis, gonorrhea, herpes, chlamydia, HPV and associated mites like scabies and crabs. Many a famed person have suffered from a VD. Syphilis sufferers include Ivan the Terrible, Voltaire (of the grand Enlightenment), Henry VIII, Mozart, Beethoven, Edgar Allen Poe, van Gogh, Adolph Hitler, and Al Capone. Capone lost his battle with syphilis ending his days with the mentality of a 12 year old on acid due to tertiary syphilis.

VD is very serious, especially with new cases of varied drug resistant strains of chlamydia and HIV. There are close to 100 different HPVs (that's genital warts kids)--men cannot be properly diagnosed unless they have symptoms of the illness. Now however, many treatments exist to either cure or control VD--but it's the newer strains we should be most concerned about.

On this VD, really show the one you love that you REALLY love them by not giving them a VD. Safe sex is your friend and if you can't be safe, please go play Grand Theft Auto San Andreas on your Playstation 2 instead. Stay away from prostitutes and gigolos--while many can be safe, is it worth watching your wanker whittle to weeness? Be even sweeter to your sweetie by getting yourself tested and presenting him/her with your clean bill of sexual health. Taking good care of yourself is the best way to show your lover you love him or her... Or shim....

Yes, caring is sharing as we all learned watching Saturday morning cartoons and after school specials. And while some say love means never having to say you're sorry, never put yourself in a position where you'll have to flagellate yourself to show remorse for sharing something your lover would prefer you'd just keep to yourself. On this beloved day for lovers, love deeply, passionately, and above all, cleanly! Happy Valentine's Day!

VD Movie: Hitch starring Will Smith, Eva Mendes, Kevin James, Amber Valetta--venereal disease not included

Year of the Cock-a-doodle-doo

Gung Hay Fat Choy! It's Chinese New Year starting Februay 9 and the Year of the Rooster is celebrated for 15 glorious days of good food, a clean house, and family. I myself, am not a rooster, but the very enviable Dragon. You often have an overabundance of Chinese births during the year of the dragon, trickling into the snake as families try and have dragon babies. It's very fortuitous and promises a good life for the child. (I have no excuse for myself.) I celebrated the New Year by having dinner at Golden Unicorn in Chinatown in New York (the Cantonese one, not the Mandarin one), feasting on a 12 course banquet with friends. We had plenty of leftovers which is very good omen for the rest of the year--lots of leftover food means we'll have a very rich year. Catching you up time:

Something to think about: Whenever people ask me what I do, I reply Programmer and they respond What kind? How many kinds are there?
